VALA. Day 1, Session 2c

Cameron Barnes and Karan Jones, University of New England, NSW. Making a virtual community real: redeveloping eSKILLS Plus using Web 2.0

Why are you building a social space?

Who is your audience?

What are their needs and wants?

What are your requirements?

What is your budget?

What makes you so certain customers will want to use your social space?

Don't build a social space just to jump on the bandwagon

Don't assume 'if you build it they will come'

Being where users are is no good if they aren't buying what you're selling

To succeed

Marketing Plan
- mail outs regularly
- use email
- endorsement from 'respected' library staff
- site renamed 'meeting place'
- competitions
- prizes
- promotions
- emphasis on fun, new features, photos
- user generated content

Evaluate

Think hard about your purpose

Effective promotion is essential

Consider prizes and giveaways - they really work
